Anti-Chinese protest held for 7th week in Vietnam

An anti-Chinese protest over the territorial dispute in the South China Sea was held for the 7th consecutive week in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi on Sunday.

Police broke up the protest for the 2nd week in a row, but let it continue for longer than they did last week.

The dispute over the islands in the South China Sea is intensifying, as Chinese vessels have harassed Vietnamese fishing boats and oil exploration ships.

About 80 people marched near the Chinese embassy in central Hanoi in the 7th weekly protest.

Police broke up the demonstration after 30 minutes, and detained about half of the protesters.

The police crackdown reflects the authorities' sensitivity to the bilateral relationship with China and public sentiment ahead of next weekend's international conference on Asian security, in which China is taking part.
